added permanently to Part B premiums for every 12-month delay in enrollment
Many veterans mistakenly believe VA coverage protects them from the Part B late enrollment penalty. It does not. Missing your enrollment window is one of the most expensive mistakes a veteran can make — and it's permanent.
What Most Veterans Get Wrong
About Medicare
These four misconceptions cost veterans thousands every year. Rodney sees them constantly — and they're 100% avoidable.
"My VA coverage means I don't need Medicare."
VA care is limited to VA facilities. If you're away from home, need emergency care, or prefer a non-VA provider — Medicare is your coverage. Without it, you pay 100% out of pocket.
"TRICARE For Life replaces Medicare — I don't need both."
TRICARE For Life requires Medicare Part B as its backbone. Drop Part B and TRICARE For Life disappears with it. You must maintain both — no exceptions.
"I can wait to enroll in Medicare — no penalty."
VA coverage does NOT qualify as creditable coverage to avoid the Part B late enrollment penalty. Every 12 months you delay outside your Initial Enrollment Period adds a permanent 10% surcharge.
"CHAMPVA and Medicare are separate — I manage them independently."
CHAMPVA is secondary to Medicare, always. If you're eligible for Medicare but haven't enrolled, CHAMPVA won't pay as if Medicare was primary — you get a much smaller reimbursement. Coordination matters.
The free Veterans Medicare Guide covers all four myths — plus your enrollment timeline, prescription drug coverage, and every free benefit you've earned.
